In spring 2025, a bold collaboration across the MICE industry delivered a pioneering, flight-free study trip from the UK to Switzerland by train, proving that sustainable travel can be inspiring, immersive and scalable. Over four days, 35 event professionals journeyed from London to Lucerne, Mount Rigi and Zurich using only low-carbon transport, including Eurostar, TGV Lyria, cogwheel trains and boats. No flights. No meat. No disposables. Every aspect of the programme was built around sustainability; from zero-waste meals and circular economy workshops to locally sourced menus and venues accessible by public transport. The result was a carbon saving of over 90% compared to air travel.
Conceived and delivered in collaboration by Evolve Events, Eurostar, the Switzerland Convention & Incentive Bureau, Zurich and Lucerne Convention Bureaus and a powerhouse of local partners, the trip was a masterclass in low-impact event design. Delegates explored practical ways to reduce environmental footprint while enhancing guest experience; proving that sustainability doesn’t mean compromise.
The trip was officially recognised with a Distinction from event:decision’s independent impact certification, which assessed the event against 30 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria, further underlining its success in delivering meaningful results.
Travel became part of the event itself, with thoughtfully curated moments including an ice-breaker quiz, vintage tram rides and wellness touches like mindful kits on board. With every decision designed to spark conversation and connection, the journey became a shared experience and a catalyst for change.
Human-centred, creatively designed and deeply collaborative, the programme set a new benchmark for sustainable incentive travel, leaving delegates inspired and empowered to lead the transition to more responsible, destination-led events.
